The Power In A Gathering Of Women

November 9th, 2006

by: Eileen McDargh, CSP, CPAE
Forget “fight or flight” as the only duo of responses in the face of stress. For women, there’s a third response: “befriend”. A landmark UCLA study turned five decades of stress research on its head with the revelation that a cascade of brain chemicals gives women a larger behavioral repertoire when confronted with stress. The hormone oxytocin is released as part of the stress response in women. It controls the fight/flight response and, instead, encourages her to tend children and gather with other women.

Accordingly to co-researcher Dr. Laura Cousino Klein, now assistant professor of bio-behavioral health at Penn State, the study suggests that this “tending and befriending” response to oxytocin produces a calming effect. Although it will take new studies to reveal all the ways in which oxytocin encourages women to care for children and band together, it might also explain why women consistently outlive men.

5 DIY baby shower gift projects

November 9th, 2006

By: Bill Williams
1. Gift baskets

First obtain a laundry basket or a craft basket, the size is dependent on the number of items that you wish to place in the basket. Fill the basket with baby laundry detergent, your favorite pre wash, stain remover, wipes to go, and some fabric softener and place in the basket.

If you are a group wishing to give that personalized baby shower basket, in addition to the items mentioned above you can add get baby outfits, baby toys and stuffed toys. You can arrange all these small items with tissue paper in the laundry basket, which will serve as your gift basket.

A further idea is to get every member of the group contributing to the gift basket to provide a small gift card with a special personal message and a small gift item which could be an essential or something to pamper the parents to be. A good idea is to include a few gift vouchers.

2. Diaper Cakes

Since the number of diapers needed determine the size of the diaper. For multi-tier diaper cakes the general guideline is to use twice as many diapers on the bottom tier as the previous tier.

Diapers should be rolled into cylinders and use rubber bands to keep the cylinders in shape. It is best to make the tiers bottom up and stick the diaper cylinders together using velcro strips. Once you have assembled the tier using the desired number of diapers, complete the tier by using some fancy ribbon wrapped round the tier.

Normally the top tie contains a special item such as a keepsake or baby toy. In addition, the top diaper tier can be further decorated by attaching suitable stuffed toys.

November 9th, 2006

By: John Zeta
Ok, so what will you buy for the creature that wants to move from one toy to the next, without taking time on any particular thing? For the boy that bounces away of the walls, and finds so much more enchantment in screaming and jumping off of facilities than in an activity that needs to be sitting? How about the kid that appears to be so much more interested to take apart appliances, Tvs or radios than in fun toys considered to be appropriate for their age group? Or babies that will use their time creating rather than playing? Previous preparation could be the biggest part of finding the perfect gift for the small kid in your list.

The type of stroller you will use for your baby is one of the biggest decisions you will need to make. When you are choosing from among the many different types of baby strollers, one of the first things to consider is your budget.

Stroller costs can range from $10 to $400 and higher. The very light weight umbrella strollers are general on the lower end. The advantage of these strollers is that they can be folded up nicely, and can store almost anywhere. The higher prices of strollers may indicate more features and better quality.

The features that come with strollers are many and you should know which ones are important to you. A convertible travel system may be your preference over a regular stroller and a car seat. Travel systems have a stay in the car base, a stroller frame to attach the infant carrier/ car safety seat to.

For your newborn baby these are especially great. Play trays with places for a bottle or juice cup come on strollers. Canopies with a vinyl window to let you keep an eye on the baby, come with many strollers. Strollers are equipped with breaks that are attached to both rear wheels and applied with your foot and also a wrist brake strap that is used with the foot brake.
